Wearing the famous Renaissance-style uniform takes more than a costume — it takes clearing one of the narrowest recruitment funnels of any armed force on Earth.

A short list of hard requirements

Applicants must be Swiss, Catholic, male, unmarried, aged between 19 and 30, at least 174 cm tall, and have already completed basic training with the Swiss Armed Forces — a Vatican role that, unusually, only citizens of one specific foreign country are eligible for at all.

Why the recruitment stays this narrow

The Guard's origins trace to a 1506 agreement with the Swiss Confederation prized for its soldiers' loyalty, and the nationality requirement has simply never been dropped in the five centuries since.

What service actually involves

Recruits commit to a minimum two years, living within Vatican City, guarding the pope and the Apostolic Palace, and training continuously in both ceremonial duties and close-protection tactics — the uniform is Renaissance, but the training behind it is current.
