The four areas, in short

  • Right by St. Peter's Square: the shortest possible walk to both the Basilica and the Museums, at a price premium and with fewer everyday restaurants nearby.
  • Prati: an elegant, mostly residential neighbourhood just north of the Vatican, with far more restaurant choice and excellent metro access — the strongest all-round pick for most visitors.
  • Ottaviano: one metro stop out, generally the best value for money, still a 10–15 minute walk to the Museums entrance.
  • Historic centre: 20–25 minutes on foot from the Vatican, but puts you in the middle of the rest of Rome — a good choice if the Vatican is a half-day trip within a longer stay.
