The most convenient areas for a Vatican visit are Prati and the streets immediately around St. Peter's Square, both a 5–15 minute walk from the Museums entrance. Budget travellers often do just as well near the Ottaviano metro stop — one stop from the Vatican with better value for money.

Vicino San Pietro (right by St. Peter's)
Steps from the Basilica and the Museums — ideal if you want to walk everywhere and start early, at a
price premium for the location.
Prati
An elegant, mostly residential neighbourhood just north of the Vatican, with excellent metro connections
and far more restaurant choice than the immediate Vatican area — a strong overall pick.
Ottaviano
One metro stop from the Vatican on Line A, generally the best value-for-money base, still walkable to
the Museums entrance in 10–15 minutes.
Historic centre
20–25 minutes on foot (or a short bus/taxi ride) from the Vatican, but puts you in the middle of
everything else in Rome — a good choice if the Vatican is a half-day trip within a longer stay.
