The route through the Vatican Museums is one-way and roughly 7 kilometres long by the time you reach the exit — the walk itself is a meaningful part of your visit time, before you even factor in stopping to look at anything.

By visit style

  • Express (1.5 hours): Sistine Chapel and a handful of highlights along the way — rushed, not recommended if avoidable.
  • Highlights (2.5–3 hours): Pio-Clementino Museum, Gallery of Maps, Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel — the realistic minimum for a satisfying visit.
  • Full visit (4–5 hours): Adds the Pinacoteca and Egyptian Museum, with time to linger.

Guided tours generally run around 3 hours at a fixed pace, covering the same highlights as a self-guided "highlights" visit.
