He was pope for barely a month — long enough to become famous, and to leave a mystery that outlived him by decades.

A pope chosen for his warmth

Cardinal Albino Luciani, Patriarch of Venice, was elected in August 1978 and quickly nicknamed “the Smiling Pope” for a warmth that stood out after the more formal style of his predecessors.

Found dead after 33 days

He was found dead in his bed on the morning of 29 September 1978, just 33 days after his election. The Vatican recorded the cause as a heart attack; no autopsy was performed, consistent with Vatican custom of the time.

Why the conspiracy theories persist

The lack of an autopsy, inconsistencies in the Vatican's initial account of who found the body, and his sudden death so early in a papacy fueled decades of speculation and books alleging foul play — claims historians generally treat as unsupported, but which the Vatican has never fully laid to rest in public perception.
